Since 2010, @ConanOBrien has deliberately followed only one person on Twitter. He tweeted why he chose user @LovelyButton: “I’ve decided to follow someone at random. She likes peanut butter and gummy dinosaurs. Sarah Killen, your life is about to change.”

Before Conan’s announcement, Sarah’s follower count was in the hundreds. Now more than 90,000 people follow her on Twitter.

People use Twitter for many reasons — for example, to broadcast their thoughts or share information. But another huge component of Twitter is to learn from and interact with others. So, what does it mean when people don’t follow anyone?

Specifically, we found eight celebrities on Twitter who either follow zero or only one person. Some follow specific fans or loved ones. Others choose to follow no one, but nonetheless, interact with fans via @mentions.
